Zabonik Pours in 6 Birdies
August 3, 2006
POWELL, OH — Marty Zabonik poured in 6 birdies last weekend at Scioto Reserve just northwest of downtown Powell, OH. The 7-point birdies racked up a career low 4-under par and enough to break into the Top 5 of the 2006 Virtual Tournament.
"He was in a zone," says partner Bill Bateson. "It might take me the rest of the year to card 6 birdies. Clearly his lowest round in Virtual Tournament history."
Zabonik scored 64 points from just over 6,600 yards. The birdies were evenly spread across his round including 3 on each side and 2 for each hole par. The bogeys came on two (Hole 7 and 14) of the most difficult holes at Scioto Reserve. The 14th is the most difficult on the golf course.
Zabonik's birdies poured in 42 points. They were added to 10 pars and 12 bonus points for the difficult private golf course. The 64-point effort was his highest score since August 1, 2003 when he poured in five 9-point birdies, nine 2-point pars and 16 bonus points for an astonishing 79 points.
"Played really well," said Zabonik after his round. "Enough to clearly lead the Spackler tournament after one round. "Another Top 10 finish has been a goal of mine since my piss pour finish in Clayton."
Marty Zabonik jumps into 5th position with 41.9 points per round. The Red Zone Alert begins on Saturday.
