SUFFOLK, VA — The Carl Spackler Open is into the swing of things this spring looking for the best opportunities for future Open Championships. Along comes Riverfront Golf Club, as years of planning have finally paved the way for another sparking, state-of-the art, golf complex.

The Captains Club announced today that Riverfront Golf Club on the shores of the Nansemond River would be added to the 2012-2015 venue list. Golf Digest's 4 1/2 star course should be considered one of the best character driven courses in Carl Spackler Open history.

"The chances of Riverfront Golf Club selected as the 2011 venue are slim," says Greg Long. "The golf course is definitely tournament ready, however patience for additional hotels and entertainment to be built in a fast growing area would be ideal."

The club itself is the centerpiece of a housing community, which hardly adds distinction – but when you also consider it’s the only Tom Doak designed layout in Virginia, your curiosity will start to build… along with your appetite.

A truly breathtaking experience, Riverfront was designed by renowned golf course architect, Tom Doak. It is situated on the banks of the Nansemond River, near the mouth of the James River. The spectacular layout takes full advantage of it's dramatic and unique riverside location.

Riverfront is an old-style course that winds its way through riverfront acreage, tidal marshes, huge oaks and pines and vast rolling farmland. It offers a truly amazing setting for a great round of golf.

"Riverfront is in my personal Top 15 for under $55 on Saturday," says Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "This is another great track that is miles from boredom. The 15th hole would be one of the most beautiful holes in Spackler history."

Designer Tom Doak sculpted the beautiful layout to take full advantage of the natural beauty surrounding it. It is a magnificent waterfront golf design. Tees are typically at ground level, the fairways are generally wide and friendly and chipping areas are plentiful. Large deep bunkers, combined with undulating greens make shot-making crucial. All but three of the 18 holes are bordered on one side by natural features, whether tidal marshes skirting along its fairways or undulating greens at water's edge - with beach bunkers on three sides. Mature pines, oaks and sycamores overhang the marsh, adding beauty and majesty to the design.

"Riverfront is located in Suffolk, VA and should not confused with a beach venue," says Kevin Long, Jr. "The ocean is 45 minutes from the golf course and lodging and entertainment would be located near the golf course."

Member Jeff Tatum would be considered the participant with the most home field advantage. Jeff lives 20 minutes from the golf course. Jay Glover's mother lives off the 16th hole.

"I do not like the idea," says Captains Club member Kevin Long, Jr. regarding the potential venue. "This is much too close to home. Cooper is whining about the location too."

Riverfront Golf Club is the first of several golf courses, which are expected to be visited, reviewed, and considered for the 2011 Carl Spackler Open Championship. Mountain Valley, Blue Ridge Trail, and Jack Frost National will be visited June 11-13.
