TEMPERANCE, MI — Martin Whalen of Michigan has signed a national letter-of-intent to play golf at the 2011 Carl Spackler Open, Mike Trojanowski of the Captains Club announced today. The rookie will join the field for the annual 54-hole tournament and be represented by Justin Gorby.

"My daughter is getting married this fall," says rookie Martin Whalen. "The bridesmades dresses are gold and winning a Golden Jacket for her and wearing it to her wedding would be something special."

Marty consistently shoots in the mid-80's. The +11.92 stroke handicap is expected to receive 2 points for bogey and 4 points for par.

"I have reservations about exposing my girls to Carl Spackler Open website and its affairs," says Whalen. "This is a partial scouting trip to determine whether they can read the website and continue to be a productive member of society."

The rookie, who took up the game at age 30, was removed as a contender for the Kitchen Pass Award months ago. Whalen says, "My wife's initial reaction to Spackler was, 'Thank God! I need a break for a few days!'."

Whalen met Justin Gorby in southern Michigan last summer while playing a round at Legacy. Marty registered on the website immediately and registered for the golf tournament back in January. "I have a small machine shop in Toledo," says Whalen. "This provides the flexibility to prepare for my first major. There is a lot at stake [referring to wedding] to bring home a Golden Jacket to Michigan."

The 2011 Carl Spackler Open will hold its annual practice round on Thursday, June 9 at 2:15PM. There are 97 golfers expected to participate in the round at Mountain Valley. There are 58 golfers planning to play 36 holes.
