January 26, 2004
COLUMBUS, OH — The Vice President of Golf Instruction, Tom McCauley today announced the signing of John McAninch of Columbus, Ohio, to a national letter of intent during the signing period in late December. John Malcovich is the 2003 Rookie of the Year and the eleventh player from Ohio to sign for this year?s major championship.
Malcovich, a sixteenth member for 2004, has decided to attend this year to show the ability to acquire kitchen passes at will. "I had reservations about playing with a new house on the way, but I have return that gopher to the tournament that made me a household name."
McCauley believes Malcovich will continue to be a big boost for the tournament. ?We are very excited that John has chosen to attend the Open Championship. He is a proven player with extensive regional and national experience. He has the ability to shoot bogeys and is an excellent student of the game.?
Jay Dilks of the Captains Club added, "Things are starting to get serious with players like this coming. He is a strong player and could get into some heads early." Dilks continued, "Malcovich is, in Spackler terms, 'a diamond in the rough'. His father played golf and his friend knows someone that is an excellent golfer. I assume it is in his genes to be a successful athlete at the amateur level and possibly the professional level of competition. I know he has set high goals for his golf future".
