Playing Like Crap
June 2, 2004
WINSTON-SALEM, NC — So you think you play like crap. Well the Carl Spackler Open has added a Crapper Trophy to the Awards Presentation for 2004. The Crapper will be given to the worst player in Carl Spackler Open history. Players completing at least 3 full tournaments are eligible for the toilet.
"This is not fair," says Jeff Cowan of Pittsburgh, PA. "The numbers must be screwed up because I don't play like Crap." Jeff Cowan is currently riding last place with 2 tournaments and 233 ranking points. The rankings track average finish per tournament based on actual place on each leaderboard. The latest tournament is given a little more weight than the previous.
"Thank god players like Jeff are in this thing," says Jamie Myers who is the worst player with currently 3 tournaments under his belt. "I think my 322 ranking gives me quite an edge on Jeff next week."
The 2002 Horses Ass, Mike Watkeys, is only up 57 points on Jeff Cowan and has not played a round of golf since the 2003 Carl Spackler Open.
"This ranking system will identify the worst player over the course of 3+ years," says Chairman Greg Long. "Our handicapping system is pretty accurate so to win this trophy, your tournament game belongs in a toilet." The NOOG system is designed to level the playing field regardless of skill level. Long continued, "When I saw Watkeys, Myers, and Cowan at the top of the list, I knew the ranking system was near perfection." The "Player Rankings" can be viewed online off the Open Championship Leaderboard page.
Mike Trojanowski and Tom McCauley round out the Top 5 as they both wore the Carl Spackler Outfit in previous years. The below list contains ranking points, place/field, and year.
1. Jeff Cowan, 233 ranking, 13/18(2002), 26/32(2003)
2. Mike Watkeys, 290 ranking, 16/18(2002), 18/32(2003)
3. Jamie Myers, 322 ranking, 7/9(2001), 17/18(2002), 10/32(2003)
4. Mike Trojanowski 325 ranking, 9/9(2001), 1/18(2002), 31/32(2003)
5. Tom McCauley, 347 ranking, 3/9(2001), 18/18(2002), 20/32(2003)
Jeff Cowan and Mike Watkeys make the Top 2 without ever wearing an Outfit. "If someone wants odds for next week, I would take one of these guys for the Carl Spackler Outfit", says Tom McCauley. "Both guys drink too much. Cowan jumped into the lake last year and Watkeys crashed a golf cart. Sounds like a date with destiny."
The 2004 Carl Spackler Open begins play in 8 days. The field of players will travel to Winston-Salem, NC for the 3 day tournament.
