Returned Passion
June 3, 2004
WINSTON-SALEM, NC — A new Tom McCauley is expected to tee it up in next week's 2004 Carl Spackler Open. A McCauley that has enjoyed a full year without greenskeeping and a full year to regain his passion for the golf he once loved.
"I have always enjoyed being in the hunt," says McCauley. "But, you cannot enjoy golf when it is your office and your occupation is not professional golfer. I was spending 50 hours per week on the golf course so playing golf on my off time was not enjoyable."
It's hard to argue with the logic of a legend. McCauley, the 2002 Spackler Outfit wearer and manager of Pro Fuzzy Zoeller's personal lawn, who critics believe played terrible that fateful year because of his pure hatred for the game. But those days are over.
"The days of reporting to anyone except to my customers are over", says McCauley. "It is truely amazing what working away from a golf course will do to you." McCauley owns a lawn and landscape business in greater Louisville, Kentucky. "I have found increased passion for the game and looking forward to the practice round this Wednesday. Wow! Did I really say that?"
With the increased passion, McCauley has returned immediately from the 100's and back to the high 80's just in time for his 4th major championship. "I remember the days when I would kick Slick's ass", says a fired up McCauley. "This is a good setting in North Carolina and I like my chances at my first Golden Jacket."
Tom McCauley is expected to receive 1 point for bogey, 3 points for par, and 7 points for birdie.
