Al Escapes Carl Outfit
June 17, 2004
WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Steve Mascaro escaped the dreaded Carl Spackler Outfit on Saturday when he shot his only pars of the week. Steve shot three pars in route to a 33 point final round and out of the tournament basement.
"He looked very good in Al's Outfit," says a jealous Matt Davis. "I would wear that Outfit to work if I looked that good." Steve Mascaro, a +25 handicap, shot only 8 bogeys and no pars in his first two rounds of play. He scored the tournament low 30 points through two rounds of play and was forced to swing the club 66 embarrassing times on the back nine during Round 1.
"I was not ready for this major championship," said a disappointed Mascaro. "I did not pick up a club until two weeks before the tournament and that killed my chances. I learned my lesson the hard way."
Steve Mascaro who was averaging the high 90's before his first major, begun the week with a 123. He returned on Friday to shoot 120 and seal the Al Czervik Outfit. "I knew the tournament coordinators were not joking around when the Outfit was on my bed Saturday morning", says Steve. "I knew that focus was required to gain some dignity from the group. I feel sorry for Watkeys. He actually played worse than I."
