Mickelson-like Debacle

CLAYTON, NC — When people say, "debacle", some people think of the British Open. Most Americans thought of the Masters when Greg Norman hacked his way out of Green Jacket. Now Phil Mickelson's ability to take his worst score in the tournament on the 72nd hole.

The Spackler members may only remember the commanding Grasser lead after Round 2, the decision to get hammered during the scramble, the nap on the party bus and indeed the final round debacle which produced only 22 points.

Grasser surprised everyone opening with 54 points during the opening round. "This guy has no business shooting under 100 strokes," said buddy Brian Hiser. "He was surprising himself for sure."

Grasser returned on Friday morning to fire 51 more points including a birdie on Hole 17. The 105 points was plenty to take the lead in his first major championship.

"I was playing pretty good," said Grasser after Round 2. "The course really sets up well for me. One more round after some drinking this evening."

Grasser proceeded to do what most players would find unthinkable. He drank and drank and drank without control or future thought. "What I saw on Friday afternoon was John Daly-like behavior," said Scott Mealey. "He gave away his first major. That is something I could never do."

Bryan's luck ran out and ran out quickly on Saturday. He played the front nine 32-over par and never regained the momentum. He dropped his final round points by 68 percent to 22 points. "It was hard to watch," said Saturday partner Bill Bateson. "He did manage to finish in 5th position, which is good enough for a 2007 exemption."

"I define hacking after 60 strokes," said Party Bus Pole Dancer Tom McCauley. "Grasser was well over that on Saturday's front nine."

Grasser also took home the rookie of the year and did manage to win the 4-man scramble trophy before passing out on the bus. He is expected to return in 2007 regardless of debacle, but maybe with a solution for Ohio's Golden Jacket dominance.
