Option: New Replay Format
February 27, 2012
CONKLIN, NY — The Captains Club announced Sunday the plans for the traditional replay round during the Carl Spackler Open. The optional event will be played on Friday afternoon, managed by Chad Long, and teeing shotgun style.
The event will take place at the tournament course, Conklin Players Club, for several reasons including price, lack of transportation time, course quality, lack of bag transportation, and beverage prices.
The replay will most likely tee in foursomes and with multiple foursomes assigned to each hole.
"This year, the optional replay round will be played in a new format," said Chad Long from the temporary media center setup behind the clubhouse. "The new format is a 4-man alternate shot scramble, and will be held at Conklin Players Club after Round 2 on Friday, June 8.
To summarize the 4-man alternate shot scramble format, each team will be comprised of four golfers split into two pairs.
A&D players and the B&C players will be paired to form a single team. Each pair within the team will alternate shots during play. The team will choose the best shot within each pair.
As an example, the A&D players tee off, the best of the two shots is chosen, and then the B&C players hit the second shot.
This continues until the hole is complete. On the following hole (and regardless of which pair finished the prior hole), the B&C player pair tees off."
Teams will be built based on golf skill. "We do not know yet when the teams will be built," says Long. "I would imagine it would be done about a month prior, but nothing will be set in stone until June 8."
The participant option will be available for registration starting this week. It will be available in March 2012. There is roughly 48 to 56 golfers expected to participate.
The 2012 Carl Spackler Open is scheduled for June 6 in Conklin, NY. There are 64 to 68 golfers expected to participate. Outstanding balances must be postmarked by the April 15 deadline.
