Down the Stretch
June 11, 2012
CONKLIN, NY — The 2012 Carl Spackler Open completed this weekend with Andy Hanks winning the 54-hole event down the stretch with two birdies on 53rd and 54th holes with gopher mascot tending the flag. All during a wonderful afternoon in the low-70's.
Rookie Mark Roner took second place.
"It was clearly the most successful event in 12 years," says Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "The entire golf tournament was perfect with ending and mobile scoring taking top honors. The new format for the replay round proved to be another great choice."
Mac Gorby lost the golf tournament. "It was a pleasure being your Carl Spackler," said Gorby at the Awards Presentation on Saturday. "I have some work to do before 2013." The 3-time returning participant entered the golf tournament averaging 2.8 triple-bogeys, 6.0 double-bogeys, 5.8 bogeys, 2.2 pars, and 0.8 birdies. He carded just 13 bogeys, 1 par, and 0 birdies through 54 holes.
Andy Hanks, Don Creighton, and Justin Gorby carded eagles during the tournament. Brett Dupree shot a pair of 4-over 76's as low stroke.
The golf course was in super condition as rain threatened, but never arrived. "The best course ever," says Bob Morris. "Really beautiful." The vast majority considered the best in the history of the major championship. "Better than Poplar Grove," says Dave Osborne, Kevin Long, and a number of others.
Fernando Martinez won the 8-ball pool tournament and Skills Challenge on Thursday. Brad Carder took 2nd in the pool tournament. Fernando knocked a shot to 9-foot 4-inches at the island green as the closest to the pin.
The 2012 Carl Spackler Open was played June 6-9. There were 64 golfers who participated in the annual event at Conklin Players Club in Conklin, NY.
