Maryland Steps In

August 17, 2012

MCHENRY, MD — The Carl Spackler Open announced today it has added the state of Maryland and Wisp to its 2013 Carl Spackler Open venue list. The resort, which is located in western Maryland, adds value and most likely the most efficient event ever.

Dominick Palumbo designed the course in 1980, it plays to 6,711 yards from the back tees, and a slope of 138, and was recently redesigned by Todd Schroeder.

It is in a hilly setting, on Deep Creek Lake, at the base of the Wisp Ski Resort, and the golf course is a classic 18-hole continuous loop design.

"They added 4 brand new holes a few years ago," says Captains Club member Greg Long. "The course has a classic feel with its tree lined rolling fairways, shallow bunkers, and 10 holes that dogleg. The new holes were designed in a way that was able to match the style and character of the original design."

The greens are fast with undulations, and at one hole, the 10th green sits on a site that once housed a barn that was rumored to be haunted.

"The bid looks good," says Long. "The resort places both lodging and golf on the same property for the second time ever with South Padre Island, TX. The lodging is walking distance to the clubhouse as it resides next to the 18th hole."

The local area has one of the only man-made white-water rafting adventures and plenty of other evening entertainment values. Black Bear, which is an outdoor/indoor bar & restaurant, hosts live music. The very nice facility is a 20 minute walk or 90 second drive from the hotel.

In a joint message, the Carl Spackler Open has a new requirement starting this summer. The Captains Club is no longer accepting event registrations without at least two scorecards posted online at poststats.com. Scorecards must be posted after June 10, 2012 and before 2013 signing date. This is a long-term move towards improving the golf event.

The Wisp in Maryland joins Sultan's Run in Indiana, Chapel Ridge in North Carolina, and Raven at Snowshoe Resort in West Virginia as potential 2013 Carl Spackler Open locations. The Captains Club continues to scout and accept bids for the June event. There are 50 to 60 golfers expected for the 13th annual golf tournament. A decision on venue is expected prior to Halloween.
