New Closest to the Pin Award
October 17, 2001
WILLIAMSBURG, VA — Carl Spackler has just released additional excitement to the 2002 Open Championship by offering a valuable, attention-getting ?closest to the pin? award. These par-3 shots will be witnessed by the entire field just before Round 2 begins.
The field will be led by it?s facilitator to a par-3 tee-box on the back nine around 8:30AM on Friday morning. Each player in the field will be given two chances to knock his shot closest to the pin. The difference between the Open Championship and other tournaments as the entire field will be on the tee-box with the player as he tries to impress.
To assist with the closest to the pin, Mike Trojanowski, 2001 Spackler Outfit Award Winner will hit first and assist on the green as players throw darts at the pin. Troj will assist by marking close shots and communicating the status of the contest back to the tee-box. Troj will also be equipped with a divot repair tool for close shots by Jay Dilks, Jeff Cowan, and Tom McCauley. The 2002 Honoree will facilitate the players through the tee-box in tournament leaderboard order and then hit last.
Tom McCauley was reached for comment about Carl's new contest. "It's not completely in the bag, but most of these guys can't hit a green from 25 yards."
The ?Closest to the Pin? contest is just one contest scheduled for the 2002 Carl Spackler Open in Williamsburg, VA and has been added to the updated tournament itinerary. The tournament is scheduled for April 18, 2002 and player letters of intent are scheduled to be mailed in mid-November.
