WILLIAMSBURG, VA — The Captains Club announced Monday that it is raised it's tournament purse by 337% for the 2002 Carl Spackler Open. The Club made the financial adjustment after demand had increased over the past summer for a real tournament feel. The winner will take home an unprecedented $337 in cash compared to the $100 that 2001 Golden Jacket winner, Greg Long took home last year.
"Our group really wants the event to succeed and money will give it the aspect it requires", said Jay Dilks of the Captains Club. "The Horses Ass Trophy shows the funny side of the players, but the purse will keep things competitive." Jay added that the tournament purse was determine for 2002 by the standard cost of the trip. Matt Davis, Vice President of Kitchen Pass Allocation added, "The winner will not just win a free vacation, but an experience of a lifetime and a few kitchen passes for next year if the purse is spent correctly."
The winner of the 72-hole tournament will not just win the purse, but the prestigous Golden Jacket and Trophy. The Open Championship is scheduled to kick off in 43 days in Williamsburg, VA. There are no favorites to date, but 18 players will have a chance at the glory.
