Old Silo Returns to Venue List

July 29, 2013

MOUNT STERLING, KY — The #1 course in the state of Kentucky, Old Silo, shined through the national scouting process and returns to the Carl Spackler Open venue list. Old Silo is all about breathtaking and surprising changes in altitude from tee to green. The course, located 30 minutes east of Lexington, KY is off Interstate 64.

The Captains Club made the public statement on Sunday. "We have been waiting for a strong Kentucky tournament course with a liquor license to grant availability for 340 rounds," says Captains Club Tom McCauley. "The walk to the hotel, a Jason Ridgeway 3-wood, is just another reason it is an outstanding venue."

The course was ranked #1 best public golf course in the state of Kentucky by PGA.com in May 2012. This 18-hole championship design is situated on 209 acres of rolling bluegrass countryside. Old Silo features 9 holes that drop in elevation with 3 holes that increase in elevation.

Somerset Creek meanders through the property and dramatic views add to the aesthetic beauty of the golf course. "God built this creek like a snake," says Jason Watson, the Vice President of Awards. "It comes into play 8 times in 4 holes." The golf course features lush bent grass tees, fairways, greens and 98 white sand bunkers. The course offers four sets of tees, ranging from 5,509 yards to 6,977 yards, and is designed to accommodate players of all skill levels.

Heather and sand bunkers are on nearly every hole to catch the wayward shots from entering the wooded areas surrounding the course. Brand new multi-tiered greens and fabulous tee boxes, streams, ponds, and other water hazards add to the natural beauty.

The 6,000 square foot clubhouse offers panoramic golf course views from its balcony. The interior provides the perfect atmosphere to relax while enjoying your favorite drink from the bar.

Old Silo was a finalist to host the 2006 Carl Spackler Open. It lost to the Neuse Golf Club in Clayton, NC for increased nightlife and never returned as a strong contender after new ownership and lack of availability. The golf course is one of very many courses across the country under new ownership as the economy heals.

"The new owners have inserted capital into the facility and course is has not been this nice in more than 5 years," says McCauley. "We have been waiting a full decade for aggressive bids in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It is pretty amazing to see all three areas provide great opportunities in less than a single year."

Old Silo offers a clubhouse bar with live music, good drinks, and great food. It also offers two solid hotels within 300 yards of the clubhouse.

"We are very excited about Old Silo and our future," says Tom McCauley. "It is another option and with options comes lower costs. Old Silo is what we want at Spackler. A championship style course for our tournament. A fantastic layout with 8 holes in the A+ column and a finishing hole as wonderful as Valley at Mountain Valley and the Championship course at Tanglewood Park."

A Captains Club decision on location will be published before Halloween. There are between 60 and 80 golfers expected based on location and scheduling. Old Silo Golf Club joins Sevierville Golf Club in TN and The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge in NC.
