Old Silo Selected for 2014

November 1, 2013

MOUNT STERLING, KY — The #1 tournament in amateur golf, Carl Spackler Open, will head to Kentucky to host its 14th annual event. The Captains Club finalized the public venue announcement just before the ultimate deadline. Old Silo Golf Club and Mount Sterling, KY will host the 2014 Carl Spackler Open with a new date; May 14-17.

"Today, we have selected Old Silo Golf Club to host the 2014 Carl Spackler Open," said Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "Mount Sterling, KY simply out-lasted everywhere else through the national scouting process. We are satisfied with our opportunities and taking our event to the home of the reigning champion."

The event was last played in the same state of the reigning champion in Pennsylvania back in 2005. Steve Hoden won the 2004 Carl Spackler Open.

The Captains Club added one of the best courses in the state of Kentucky to its large portfolio of tournament courses. Old Silo was ranked #1 best public golf course in the state of Kentucky by PGA.com in May 2012. This 18-hole championship design is situated on 209 acres of rolling bluegrass countryside. Old Silo features 9 holes that drop in elevation with 3 holes that increase in elevation.

Somerset Creek meanders through the property and dramatic views add to the aesthetic beauty of the golf course. "God built this creek like a snake," says Jason Watson, the Vice President of Awards. "It comes into play 8 times in 4 holes." The golf course features lush bent grass tees, fairways, greens and 98 white sand bunkers. The course offers four sets of tees, ranging from 5,509 yards to 6,977 yards, and is designed to accommodate players of all skill levels.

Tall fescue and sand bunkers are on nearly every hole to catch the wayward shots from entering the wooded areas surrounding the course. Multi-tiered greens and fabulous tee boxes, streams, ponds, and other water hazards add to the natural beauty.

The 6,000 square foot clubhouse offers panoramic golf course views from its balcony. The interior provides the perfect atmosphere to relax while enjoying your favorite drink from the bar.

"The finest clubhouse/finishing hole combination in Carl Spackler Open history," says Captains Club member Pat Boland. "The bonus of live mobile tournament scoring expands our venue into another exciting event."

Old Silo offers a clubhouse bar with live music, good drinks, and great food. It also offers event lodging within 400 yards of the clubhouse parking lot.

"We had been waiting a full decade for aggressive bids in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee," says Greg Long. "It is pretty weird to see all three areas provide great opportunities in less than a single year."

Kentucky is the 11th different state to host a Carl Spackler Open. The venue selection takes the event outside the Appalachian Mountains for the 2nd time in 6 years.

The 2014 Carl Spackler Open will be played in Mount Sterling, KY. The golf tournament will be held Thursday, May 15 through Saturday, May 17. The traditional practice round will be held on Wednesday, May 14. There are 48 to 60 participants expected for the 14th annual event. The required fee is $424. Golfers can register online regardless of their attendance. The event has a $120 non-refundable non-transferrable deposit. The official registration period begins today on November 1.
