Pondering Tournament Date
May 15, 2002
WILLIAMSBURG, VA — The 2003 Carl Spackler Open, #1 amateur tournament, could open first round play on Thursday, June 5, 2003, the Captains Club announced Tuesday. "Based on the weather almanac, Memorial Day Weekend, Father's Day and the future of the tournament, I felt like this was the best weekend," said Don Creighton. The tournament could change format and stretch from 18 holes on Thursday to 36 holes on Friday, June 6 and finish off with 18 holes on June 7.
With the help of the Captain?s Club, Carl Spackler decided the best time for the Open Championship is in the month of June. With the last year?s tournament in early April and the first year in March, the 2002 Open was scheduled in mid-April to properly accommodate a move to June in 2003. ?Our future move to June will be great. It will open the door for play in Michigan, Ohio, Florida, West Virginia, Myrtle Beach, and just about anywhere. We believe this will also drive the overall cost in half?, said Matt Davis, a Captain?s Club member.
This year?s tournament course and date have not been selected as of yet, but will be played in the Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia which should attract a huge field of players. The Captain?s Club has also added an additional practice round and press conference on June 4, 2003 for interested players.
