Poplar Grove Golf Club

Poplar Grove was nationally recognized as "#8 Best New Upscale Public Facility" by Golf Digest in 2005. It is presently the 13th best course in the state of Virginia, which includes both public and private courses.

The golf course is located in an upscale golf community. There are many large homes throughout the property. The golf course has a small stone pro shop and a Manor House Cafe built in 1773. There is no traditional clubhouse at this time. Electric carts with GPS are not even kept in a lockable building, but under a large carport. The parking lot is gravel.

The practice range, practice green, and 1st tee are located 220 yards behind the Manor House Cafe. The 10th tee is located 270 yards behind the Manor House Cafe.

Poplar Grove has the highest USGA Slope Rating in our 9-year history at 138. To compare... Rock Hollow was 131. Grande was 132. Neuse was 129. Mountain Valley was 131. Tanglewood Park was 135. Thunder Hill was 137.

We are playing the 'blue tee', which is 6,557 yards. Participants 50 years of age or older are welcome to play one tee up (white) at 6,101 yards. Poplar Grove has 10 holes that drop in elevation, which in a sense will remove 120 yards from the golf course.

Players should expect to see 3 holes moved up a tee for the entire week. This is on purpose and by design. The golf course has approved the moves of tees for holes #4, #10, and #17. 'Blue tee' will be moved up to traditional 'white tee' locations. White will be moved up to gold.

There are strong rumors from the Poplar Grove clubhouse. The greens will roll 10 1/2 on the stimpmeter in June. For golfers unfamiliar with stimp, the greens at Poplar Grove will roll extremely fast. To measure, Rock Hollow stimped 8 and 'The Grande' stimped 8 1/2.
